How is this book unique? Font adjustments & biography included Unabridged (100% Original content) Illustrated About Poems in Two Volumes, Volume 1 by William Wordsworth "Poems, in Two Volumes is a collection of poetry by William Wordsworth, published in 1807. It contains many notable poems, including:""Resolution and Independence""""I Wandered Lonely as a Cloud""""My Heart Leaps Up""""Ode: Intimations of Immortality""""Ode to Duty""""The Solitary Reaper""""Elegiac Stanzas""""Composed upon Westminster Bridge, September 3, 1802""""London, 1802""""The world is too much with us""Poems in Two Volumes has been considered to be the peak of Wordsworth's power, and of his popularity. However, it was poorly reviewed by Wordsworth's contemporaries, including Lord Byron, whom Wordsworth would come to despise. Byron said of the volume, in one of its first reviews, ""Mr. Wordsworth ceases to please, ... clothing [his ideas] in language not simple, but puerile"". Wordsworth himself wrote ahead to soften the thoughts of The Critical Review, hoping his friend Wrangham would push a softer approach. He succeeded in preventing a known enemy from writing the review, but it didn't help; as Wordsworth himself said, it was a case of ""Out of the frying pan, into the fire"". Of any positives within Poems in Two Volumes, perceived masculinity in ""The Happy Warrior"" was one. ""I Wandered Lonely as a Cloud"" couldn't have been further from it. Wordsworth took the reviews stoically."

First published in London in 1888, this is the complete works of one of the great poets of English Romanticism in ten charming, compact volumes. WILLIAM WORDSWORTH (1770-1850), Britain's Poet Laureate from 1843 until his death, limned some of the finest verse in the English language, tender poetry on human love and the natural world-some of his most memorable lines describe England's beautiful Lake District, where he spent much of his life, as filtered through his sensitive and serious heart. Beloved of readers for centuries, Wordsworth's timeless verse is a treasure to enjoy for the nourishment of one's own soul, and to share with other lovers of language.

Volume 1 of The Prose Works of William Wordsworth, as edited by W J B Owen and Jane W Smyser. This is a print version of the new, searchable, navigable, electronic edition of this standard work. Compared with the original Clarendon edition, this one has two advantages: textual notes are more clearly separated and are columnized; and the existence of editorial commentary is indicated by marginal symbols in the text (in the ebook, of course, these symbols are hyperlinked to the commentary). While colour is used in the preview, as in the ebook, the print in the paperback is black and white. The Contents include Wordsworth's famous poetical manifesto, the 'Preface to Lyrical Ballads', his Jacobinical defence of political terror in 'A Letter to the Bishop of Llandaff; and an impassioned intervention in the peninsular wars, protesting at British betrayal of Portuguese and Spanish allies at the Convention of Cintra.

The Impassioned Life

The Impassioned Life argues that theology’s task today is to rethink the nature of the emotions and their relation to human reason. Such rethinking is necessary because the Christian tradition feels ambivalently about the emotions. Armed with a commitment to body-soul dualism, many writers have equated the image of God with rationality and wondered whether emotion is an essential feature of human nature; however, the tradition has also affirmed the value of emotions such as love and compassion and has sometimes asserted the value of so-called negative emotions such as anger. The question, then, is whether the tradition’s pastoral insight into the importance of moderation and control of the emotions requires us to think dualistically about soul (identified with reason) and body (the seat of emotions). To answer this question, The Impassioned Life explores the vital resources of the Christian theological tradition and also of contemporary scientific and psychological research in order to achieve a more adequate theological understanding of the emotions and reason. At heart, it offers a holistic, integrated vision of the Christian life lived passionately in its full range of human feeling as life in the Spirit.
