Making Sense of Suffering by Joni Eareckson TadaSuffering is miserable. When you're overwhelmed by pain and problems, it's easy to feel helpless, hopeless and sinking into a whirlpool of self-pity. Joni Eareckson Tada knows about these emotions first hand. A diving accident in 1967 left her confined to a wheelchair as a quadriplegic at the age of 17. Joni knows what it's like to suffer chronic pain. Yet she has found comfort and meaning in the God of the Bible. Joni says, “Somewhere after the first five years of life in my wheelchair, I noticed a change in my hardships. I was beginning to see how my quadriplegia was working for my good and God's glory - simply put, it meant becoming more like Christ.” Making Sense of Suffering is a Scripture-based ebook that will bring hope and comfort to those who are going through for personal difficulties, and will be a great help to groups dealing with grief, disabilities, emotional and physical trauma, divorce, and more.

The atomic bombs dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki in August of 1945 unleashed a force as mysterious as it was deadly—radioactivity. In 1946, the United States government created the Atomic Bomb Casualty Commission (ABCC) to serve as a permanent agency in Japan with the official mission of studying the medical effects of radiation on the survivors. The next ten years saw the ABCC's most intensive research on the genetic effects of radiation, and up until 1974 the ABCC scientists published papers on the effects of radiation on aging, life span, fertility, and disease. Suffering Made Real is the first comprehensive history of the ABCC's research on how radiation affected the survivors of the atomic bomb. Arguing that Cold War politics and cultural values fundamentally shaped the work of the ABCC, M. Susan Lindee tells the compelling story of a project that raised disturbing questions about the ethical implications of using human subjects in scientific research. How did the politics of the emerging Cold War affect the scientists' biomedical research and findings? How did the ABCC document and publicly present the effects of radiation? Why did the ABCC refuse to provide medical treatment to the survivors? Through a detailed examination of ABCC policies, archival materials, the minutes of committee meetings, newspaper accounts, and interviews with ABCC scientists, Lindee explores how political and cultural interests were reflected in the day-to-day operations of this controversial research program. Set against a period of conflicting views of nuclear weapons and nuclear power, Suffering Made Real follows the course of a politically charged research program and reveals in detail how politics and cultural values can shape the conduct, results, and uses of science.

Protestant reformers sought to effect a radical change in the way their contemporaries understood and coped with the suffering of body and soul that were so prominent in the early modern period. This book examines the genesis of Protestant doctrines of suffering among the leading reformers and then traces the transmission of these doctrines from the reformers to the common clergy. It also examines the reception of these ideas by lay people.

Is God really in charge? Where is he when everything goes wrong? The Life of Joseph shows how God can take misfortune and evil and turn it into great good. Joseph was betrayed by people close to him and had every reason to grow bitter, yet continued to obey God. And God was working behind the scenes to change Joseph and his family. The Life of Joseph is a easy-to-use, beautifully illustrated guide through God's purposes in suffering. This pamphlet follows the story of Joseph from the beginnings of God's promise to Abraham to the reconciliation of Joseph's family in Egypt. Life of Joseph includes a time line of the important events in the lives of Joseph and his family, as well as a family tree of Jacob's (Israel) sons. Life of Joseph also includes a side-by-side comparison of the dreams Joseph interpreted and how God was working in the lives of Joseph, Jacob, his brothers, and Judah to ultimately bring about the promised Messiah, Jesus! Life of Joseph helps us see meaning in suffering and aids us in our own journey toward wisdom. Includes a map and time line. Why is Joseph's story so compelling? Look at Joseph's life at age 17: •Favored excessively by his father •Hated by his 10 older brothers, who had a history of violence and treachery. •Thrown into a pit in the wilderness •Sold into slavery and never returned home again. •His parents were given proof he was dead and no search was instigated Later, when it appeared his life was improving, he was... •Stalked by someone powerful and vengeful •Falsely accused and imprisoned •Abandoned in jail without friends or defenders •Forgotten by people who owed him a favor To any observer, it would appear that God had abandoned Joseph. But invisibly God was working behind the scenes. Life of Joseph brings the fascinating story of Jacob, Joseph, and his family to life and is a resource you will be referring to again and again as you study the book of Genesis.

On the eve of the Revolution, the Carolina lowcountry was the wealthiest and unhealthiest region in British North America. Slavery, Disease, and Suffering in the Southern Lowcountry argues that the two were intimately connected: both resulted largely from the dominance of rice cultivation on plantations using imported African slave labor. This development began in the coastal lands near Charleston, South Carolina, around the end of the seventeenth century. Rice plantations spread north to the Cape Fear region of North Carolina and south to Georgia and northeast Florida in the late colonial period. The book examines perceptions and realities of the lowcountry disease environment; how the lowcountry became notorious for its 'tropical' fevers, notably malaria and yellow fever; how people combated, avoided or perversely denied the suffering they caused; and how diseases and human responses to them influenced not only the lowcountry and the South, but the United States, even helping to secure American independence.

Is fear causing you to lose sleep, stress out, or worry? Joni Eareckson Tada sheds light on the bondage of fear in her BRAND NEW ebook. Breaking the Bonds of Fear is about an unhealthy fear of man that a lot of Christians live their whole lives with. Joni explains that our aim is to decrease our sinful fear of man, and increase our reverent fear of the Lord. We can develop a fear of the Lord by trusting in Him and reading the Bible. There might be times in your life where you're not sure if God really cares about your circumstances or realizes the state you're in, but taking a look at specific stories in the Bible will help you see God's bigger picture. God wants you to trust in him, and when you read this ebook, you will clearly see how much God cares for you. Joni also talks about the fear that was generated from her tragic diving accident, and the steps that were taken to grow confidence in the Lord after her tragic accident that left her quadriplegic. Even death is not something to fear, when our trust rests in the only one who conquered death! Let Jesus be the ballast of your ship, for it is only then that you will find peace and restoration from fear.

When these considerations are fully taken into account, it becomes as difficult to justify the infliction of suffering on animals as it is to do so in the case of human infants." "Linzey invites the reader to examine the rational case and then see how it can be applied to a detailed analysis of three practical issues: hunting with dogs, fur farming, and commercial sealing. He examines the economic, legal, and political considerations while retaining an ethical focus."--BOOK JACKET.
