Through a plentiful selection of skill-building and self-evaluation exercises, author Charles Zastrow’s comprehensive, workbook-style text promotes his philosophy that students learn group leadership skills best when they can practice them in class. Teaching social work students how to lead and participate effectively in groups are challenges. The basic assumption of this text is that the best way for students to learn how to run groups is by leading groups in class. The classroom thus becomes a laboratory for students to practice and develop their leadership skills. In this eighth edition of SOCIAL WORK WITH GROUPS: A COMPREHENSIVE WORKBOOK, Zastrow discusses topics central to a successful understanding of group leadership: stages of groups, group dynamics, verbal and nonverbal communication, types of groups, and diversity in groups. A major theme of this edition is to provide text content and skill-building exercises that focus on helping students acquire the 10 Competencies and 41 Practice Behaviors of the 2008 EPAS (Educational Policy and Accreditation Standards) of the Council on Social Work and Education (CSWE). The guiding principles have been to ensure that experiences from the global South are given voice; that women are properly represented among contributors; that the wide spectrum of communication formats is included; that further reading is provided where relevant; and that some examples are provided of repressive social movement media, not exclusively progressive ones. Thematic essays address selected issues such as human rights media, indigenous peoples' media, and environmentalist media, and on key concepts widely used in the field such as alternative media, citizens' media, and community media. The encyclopedia engages with all communication media: broadcasting, print, cinema, the Internet, popular song, street theatre, graffiti, and dance. The entries are designed to be relatively brief with clear, accessible, and current information. Students, researchers, media activisits, and others interested in this field will find this to be a valuable resource. Coping effectiveness training (CET) aims to improve skills for assessing stress, teaching a range of coping skills that can be used to tackle stress, and provide an opportunity for interaction with others who have similar experiences of spinal cord injury. CET includes the identification of effective and ineffective responses to stress, especially those that are particularly unhelpful, such as disengagement, general avoidance, long term denial, and the expression of extreme emotion. The intervention consists of seven, 60-75 minute sessions run two a week in small groups of six to nine people. By working in small groups, participants are able to share experience and build a community, reducing the sense of isolation that often results from sever injury. A corresponding workbook provides monitoring forms, homework exercises, and other user-friendly techniques to continue the work outside of therapy.
