Annotation When the Missouri state legislature overrode Governor Bob Holden's veto in 2003 to make conceal-and-carry the law of the land, the Show-Me State became one of the last in the country to adopt this type of law. In fact, it took years of concerted effort on the part of pro-gun advocates to make this a reality. In Showdown in the Show-Me State, William Horner chronicles this complex and fascinating fight in clear, chronological order beginning with the first bill introduced into the Missouri General Assembly in 1992 and ending with the state supreme court's decision in 2004 that Missouri's constitution permitted the legislature to grant Missourians the right to carry concealed weapons. There is, it is often argued, no state more typically "American" than Missouri. The state is closely divided along partisan lines, as is the nation as a whole, and in the previous century, Missouri voters have regularly chosen the winner in almost every presidential election. By offering an examination of guns and gun policy in Missouri, this book provides a glimpse into the hearts and minds of Missourians and, by extension, of mainstream America as well. Horner's in-depth case study details the give-and-take among legislators and examines the role that interest groups played in the evolution of this divisive issue. Horner's book--part policy analysis, part interest group study, and part history--will appeal to readers with an interest in the issue of gun control or in the political process, and it will provide a thorough resource for those who study policy making at the state level.

This book stirred my emotions and encouraged me to be more active in living my convictions. You dealt with global and personal concerns that both touched the heart and soul. I cringed as I read about the slave girl on the auction block. Anxiety swelled within my heart as I pondered plutonium poisoning. With all the problems and terrible challenges you raise, you did not create a book without hope. Both moving and powerful, this little book of verse offers challenge, insight and heartfelt emotion. [Linda GanstromArt Professor, Fort Hays State University, Hays, KS]. Show Me Equality is magnificent in its simplicity, scathing in its revelations, and powerful in its directness [Stephen R. Shapiro, ChairCommunication Department, Fort Hays State University, Hays, KS] Economical brush strokes of vibrant and vivid colorsyou move the minds eye, heart and soul. [Bruce BardwellTheatre Arts, Fort Hays State University, Hays, KS] This collection is vintage Coomansingh. The poetry burns deep within the consciousness and destroys all the props we lean on, but in the end you are sure to feel like the phoenix as you rise from the ashesthe best work yet. This book is intended be a thought-provoking discussion of real issues in the healthcare debate as seen through the eyes of suffering consumers. "He who feels it, knows it" It is not intended as a substitute for any study generated by specialists in the fields of finance, economics, government, or healthcare related law. It simply documents and discusses challenges in health-related experiences in everyday life of ordinary people, not law makers. It is a "he, who feels it, knows it" life record of experiences of the under-privileged in America. This straightforward read incorporates the health systems of different countries with the purpose of provoking the reader to analyze and compare the healthcare system in the United States of America with that of other countries, some of which are industrialized nations, while others are developing nations; and to challenge the government representatives on the issues. Peter Schoppa of Germany (Chapter 10) states, "Health insurance and nursing insurance are ruled by the principle of legal liability to insure. Immaterial are age, sex, and personal status, state of health or citizenship of the insured." The U.S. is faced with a health crisis that impacts its past and current economical situation. U.S. Census Bureau August 2008 report that: there were 35.920 million uninsured U.S. citizens and 9.737 million uninsured foreign nationals residing within the United States, that is "nearly 46 million" uninsured people in the United States. What is often discussed in the media is rather exciting, loquacious, and thrilling. These discussions and conclusions relate to issues occurring on another planet - NOT this one down here! I believe that the treatment of the healthcare issues as presented in this book will help law makers and the media, make informed decisions about universal healthcare on this planet - Earth!

This paper examines access to business finance by Canadian small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) and to housing finance by Canadian households (particularly non-prime borrowers) against the background of a fairly concentrated and protected banking industry. It finds access broadly adequate for the former group. However, given the dominance of the large banks and their fairly low risk tolerance, financing of riskier projects is a challenge. Problems with venture capital, plausibly related to the prevalence of tax-advantaged labor-sponsored funds, exacerbate the situation for the most innovative SMEs. The paper also finds the market for housing finance to be highly advanced and sophisticated. However, non-prime mortgage financing is in its infancy in Canada, and further development of that sector (while avoiding the excesses that beset the U.S. market in the last few years) would be beneficial. More broadly, despite recent innovations, options available to Canadians for financing house purchases are still somewhat limited, with scarce availability of mortgage maturities beyond five years particularly surprising. Further advances in securitization could help progress in both of these areas.

The first comprehensive history of the Obama administration's evidence-based initiatives. From its earliest days, the Obama administration planned and enacted several initiatives to fund social programs based on rigorous evidence of success. Ron Haskins and Greg Margolis tell the story of six—spanning preschool and K-12 education, teen pregnancy, employment and training, health, and community-based programs. Readers will appreciate the fast-moving descriptions of the politics and policy debates that shaped these federal programs and the analysis of whether they will truly reshape federal social policy and greatly improve its impacts on the nation's social problems. Based on interviews with 134 individuals (including advocates, officials at the Office of Management and Budget and the Domestic Policy Council, Congressional staff, and officials in the federal agencies administering the initiatives) as well as Congressional and administration documents and news accounts, the authors examine each of the six initiatives in separate chapters. The story of each initiative includes a review of the social problem the initiative addresses; the genesis and enactment of the legislation that authorized the initiative; and the development of the procedures used by the administration to set the evidence standard and evaluation requirements—including the requirements for grant applications and awarding of grants.
