Ocean View, a rich historical beachfront hamlet on the northern-most reaches of the city of Norfolk, was at one time a major resort destination for beachgoers and amusement park lovers, from Florida to Maine and west to the Mississippi. Ocean View presents a comprehensive pictorial history of this resort, its development as an important residential and recreational section of Norfolk, and the people who made it happen from 1862 to 1965. Using over 170 photographs, including those shot by Charles S. Borjes,"Virginia's finest press photographer of his day," we can experience and explore this very special part of Norfolk. From the tranquility of the chapter entitled Mr. Lincoln Walks the Beach, set during the American Civil War, to the fury and excitement of sections like Hurricane!, Fisherman's Paradise and the Coney Island of the South, and World War II and the Big Band Era, the history of Ocean View is chronicled with unsurpassed detail.

"Emily sat bolt upright in bed. She looked at her curtains. It was still dark outside. As she turned something caught her eye. In the centre of one side of her room was a fireplace. On the mantel stood her clock, which was in the shape of a pink pig. The pink pig said that it was half past midnight. But what caught her attention was a tiny sliver of light, which she could see down the edge of the fireplace, between the black fireplace and the white wood surround. "What was that?" she wondered. She walked up to it and pressed her hand against the fireplace. At the touch of her hand it swung back, the sliver of light grew wide, and a passageway opened up."Life is boring in Ocean View Terrace, or so Emily thinks, as the school holidays draw to a close and a new school term looms ever closer. But in this sleepy little town on the East Anglian coast strange things are happening ... and Emily could never imagine in her wildest dreams the whole new world she is about to discover.

Clara Sue Carpenter has been taking care of her husband, Harold, after a massive stroke made it impossible for him to do for himself. For the past ten years, she has been his one and only caregiver twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week. Although he is almost impossible to understand when he tries to speak, he has no problem calling her a slut and other ugly things better left unsaid. Her once-exciting, exhilarating life has become nothing more than a dull, boring, day-to-day existence. She and Harold have come to Panama City Beach, Florida, to celebrate their fortieth anniversary. Clara Sue wants to try to relive a time when they were happily married-before the stroke and before he became so cruel. When Harold refuses to see things her way, she decides she will celebrate it the only way she knows how: she gets all dolled up at a local hair salon, buys a new outfit, and goes out on the town alone, leaving Harold in bed where he has to stay until her return. To her delight, she meets a handsome gentleman, Michael Morgan, who likes to dance as much as she does. They spend the evening drinking margaritas and dancing until closing. Her new friend walks her out to her SUV, thanks her for a lovely night, and bids her good bye. When she gets back to her condo, she is floating on cloud nine. Unfortunately, Harold is not a happy man and lets her know it by calling her names and being harder than ever to get along with. Regardless of his attitude, Clara Sue plans on spending her actual anniversary night on the town in hopes of running into her dance partner again. The next morning, she is making breakfast while Harold is watching the news on TV. A pretty young reporter interrupts with breaking news. A man is found dead in his car at the parking lot of the Sapphire Club. The victim has been identified as Michael Morgan. Police are looking for a woman known only as Clara Sue as she is the last person to see him alive. It is at that moment Clara Sue realizes she is the prime suspect for murder. 1

For 12 days in November 2002, Marina Abramovic lived on three open platforms in the Sean Kelly Gallery in New York. She did not eat or speak, nor did have any privacy: the rooms were open and spectators were even invited to observe the artist through a high-powered telescope. She had no escape: the ladders leaning against bedroom, sitting room and bathroom had rungs made of large butcher knives. Throughout her 30-year career, Abramovic has used her body as her primary material, pushing it to extremes of altered consciousness, often putting herself in great physical peril. Her concern with creating works that ritualize the simple actions of everyday life like lying, sitting, dreaming and thinking focuses, in effect, on the manifestation of a unique mental state. In one early solo performances, the artist announced that she would be a passive object for six hours and laid out 72 items spectators could use on her, including a loaded gun. A fight broke out when someone tried to use it. Beginning in the late 70s, she and her then partner Ulay collaborated on now classic performances in which they crawled on their stomachs with a python that hadn't eaten in two weeks; collided with each other, naked, at top speed; sat motionless for seven hours at either end of a long table, trying not even to blink; and, most famously and difficultly, crossed the Great Wall of China, starting at opposite ends and walking until they met in the middle. Abramovic thought "The House With the Ocean View" would be most like walking this last piece, so she mounted the platforms at Sean Kelly Gallery clad in the old hiking boots she wore in China. This volume presents documentation of "The House With the Ocean View," Abramovic's most important performance work to date, alongside essays by the artist, her gallerist Sean Kelly, art historian Thomas McEvilley, curator Chrissie Iles, and others. Published in conjunction with the Sean Kelly Gallery

Adrift somewhere in the annals of space, there is a floating barrier separating the here and now from the darkest reaches of our imaginations. Every once in awhile, that barrier suffers wounds from one side gnashing against the other, and tears in the delicate fabric allow them to meet with strange consequences. Riding the gushing flow of the imagination river into the seas of reality, the ride on the waterfall becomes smooth, outside life barely memorable. What happens when your eyes glaze over, and you experience sleep? What happens when your world becomes a waking dream? Then, you find yourself lost in a wave of tranquility, pulled under in willing surrender as another glimmering reflection in my nightas ocean view.
