Since the publication of the third edition of Geriatric Medicine, extraordinary advances have occurred in the science of aging and the potential for biomedical research to give us answers to many, if not most, of the age-related disorders that threaten the quality of life in older years. At the most basic level, the successful mapping of the human genome was declared complete in the fall of 2000. Understanding the map of the human genome is as important as understanding the map of genomes of important laboratory species, ranging from the microscopic worms and fruit?ies used in most classic genetic studies to rodents such as laboratory mice, and eventually to primates, on which much of the research on the aging human brain is done. The genetic maps of all of these species, including our own, does not answer clinical questions, but it does open the door to dramatic, rapid, and ef?cient answers to questions about the genetic polymorphisms related to diseases in humans. The telomerase story also unfolded since the third edition. Telomerase is an enzyme responsible for maintaining the telomeres—the redundant DNA portions at the end of chromosomes—whose shortening seems to be linked directly to cell senescence,ap- tosis, and the control over cell death, which,at the level of the individual cell, seems to be linked to the decline of organ function and eventually aging and death within the org- ism.

The first edition was published in 1989, so the current edition was sorely needed in light of new developments. The material is in nine chapters beginning with discussion of handling and reporting of specimens for pathologic examination. Aiming to make accurate pathologic evaluation an integral part of clinical decision making, Yu (pathology, Northridge Hospital Medical Center) presents gross and microscopic diagnostic features of various disease processes, emphasizing differential diagnosis. The book is abundantly illustrated, including representations of unusual as well as the more common variations of tumors. Annotation copyrighted by Book News, Inc., Portland, OR.

This volume builds upon the work of its predecessor by liberally illustrating the spectrum of each tumour and disease described, whilst providing many new illustrations. Morphometry, flow cytometry, immunohistochemistry, gene rearrangement studies, and other molecular biologic methodologies are exciting new areas that are being developed into diagnostic procedures in the pathology laboratory. Where these methodologies are applicable to salivary gland disease, they are included. Histomorphologic evaluation, however, remains the principal and most useful method for diagnosis of salivary gland tumors and is the emphasis of this edition. A differential diagnosis is included in the discussion of most tumours, and the cytopathologic features of those tumours most commonly encountered in the cytopathology laboratory are discussed.

The focus of Berek and Hacker's for four editions has been on the application of basic and clinical science to the clinical practice of gynecologic oncology. That approach has been successful and the book has been well received. The Fifth Edition follows the format of the previous editions, with the addition of color. We will also include a fully searchable companion Website that includes an image bank.

This book provides quick and convenient access to both textual and visual information on all common and many less common tumors, both benign and malignant. Relevant premalignant conditions are also illustrated, and particular attention is paid to neoplastic conditions which are often misinterpreted by less experienced practitioners. Contents are arranged in an alphabetical sequence of organs, with types of tumor organized by order of malignancy. Detailed information about the structure of tumors is provided by high-quality color illustrations, and large-scale photomicrographs are used to obtain the optimum reproduction of structural detail. A full and detailed index facilitates cross referencing of similar tumors in different organs. This authoritative book will serve as an excellent reference for pathologists and oncologists.

Substantially revised with hundreds of new schematic drawings, photographs, and micrographs, the Fourth Edition of Rubin's Pathology maintains the clinical approach that is ideal for medical students. This edition is packaged with a brand-new electronic supplement--the Virtual Pathology Slide Set. Students can view digital slides of microscopic specimens with "virtual microscope" viewer software that enables panning, zooming, and magnification. Every copy of the textbook comes with a CD-ROM containing 5 specimens. Faculty and schools wishing to license a more complete set of 100 virtual slides on DVDs can license the Virtual Pathology Slide Set.

During the past ten years numerous new findings have been documented in the field of gynecological pathology, especially in respect of neoplasms. These findings have been generated by the application of recently developed techniques of immunology and molecular biology. However, clinicopathologic examinations· are still an absolute requirement for the morphologic evaluation of neoplasms, including gynecological tumors. The International Society of Gynecological Pathologists (ISGYP) has contributed greatly to the progress within gynecological pathology. The ISGYP Nomenclature Committee has promoted the International Histological Classification of Gynecological Tumors under the auspices of the W orid Health Organization. A new edition of the classification of tumors and tumor-like conditions of trophoblastic disease, uterine corpus, cervix, vagina, and vulva is currently in press. A second volume covering the ovaries, fallopian tubes, broad ligament, and female peritoneum will be published later. Organization of scientific symposia and seminars has also been an important activity of the ISGYP. The present editor organized and chaired a symposium entitled "Recent Progress in Diagnostic Pathology of Gynecological Tumors" held in Sendai, Japan on 11 April 1986 in close cooperation with Prof. T. Okagaki, University of Minnesota Medical School, and under the joint auspices ofthe ISGYP and the Japanese Society of Pathology. The following topics were discussed at this symposium: - Immunocytochemistry of gestational trophoblastic disease (Dr. R.J.
